From the 13th century through to the 18th century, in an area stretching from the British Isles to Italy, ropes were constructed in rope walks. These were very long buildings where strands equal to the full length of the rope were spread out and then laid up or twisted together to form the rope. The cable length was thus set by the length of the available rope walk. Hence, the unit of length termed cable length. The system allowed for production of ropes 300 yards long or longer.

Long ropes were necessary in shipping as sheets and halyards. Better a long rope than short ropes spliced together. The short splice is strongest, but doubles the diameter of the rope at the area of the splice, causing problems where lines ran through pulleys. Any splices narrow enough to maintain smooth running would be unable to support the required weight.

Common materials for rope include natural fibres such as manila hemp, hemp, linen, cotton, coir, jute, and sisal.

Lodestone (magnetite) is one of only a very few minerals that is found naturally magnetized.

In Europe, the magnetic compass first appeared in Amalfi, Italy, around the turn of the 14th century. But it is not known if the magnetic compass was also invented in the West or if it migrated to Europe along trade routes from China. However, it is clear that because sea trade and military advantage were of far more strategic importance to Western nations, they pushed the technology of the magnetic compass far more intensely than did the Chinese. With the successive rise of the Portuguese, Spanish, Dutch, and English empires, development of the compass shifted to the European nations facing the Atlantic Ocean.

Though the behavior of lodestone, a naturally magnetized piece of the mineral magnetite, was observed by the ancient Greek philosophers Thales of Miletus and Socrates, the evidence is clear that the idea for using it in a compass first appeared in China. There are allusions in the manuscript Wu Ching Tsung Yao, written in 1040, to “an iron fish” suspended in water that pointed to the south. And the earliest reference to a magnetic direction-finding device for land navigation is recorded in a Song Dynasty book dated to 1040-44.

The compass was invented more than 2,000 years ago. The first compasses were made of lodestone, a naturally magnetized ore of iron, in Han dynasty China between 300 and 200 BC. The compass was later used for navigation by the Song Dynasty. Later compasses were made of iron needles, magnetized by striking them with a lodestone. Dry compasses begin appearing around 1300 in Medieval Europe and the Medieval Islamic world. This was replaced in the early 20th century by the liquid-filled magnetic compass.

"Providence College archaeologist Thomas Strasser and his team came across a whopping surprise—a sturdy 5-inch-long (13-centimeter-long) hand ax.

Knapped from a cobble of local quartz stone, the rough-looking tool resembled hand axes discovered in Africa and mainland Europe and used by human ancestors until about 175,000 years ago. This stone tool technology, which could have been useful for smashing bones and cutting flesh, had been relatively static for over a million years.

Crete has been surrounded by vast stretches of sea for some five million years. The discovery of the hand ax suggests that people besides technologically modern humans—possibly Homo heidelbergensis—island-hopped across the Mediterranean tens of thousands of millennia earlier than expected.

Many researchers have hypothesized that the early humans of this time period were not capable of devising boats or navigating across open water. But the new discoveries hint that these human ancestors were capable of much more sophisticated behavior than their relatively simple stone tools would suggest."

Trade, Occupation, Status Surnames

Trade Surnames

Most of them originated in mediaeval towns and villages, and as each one had its Carter, Hayward, Thatcher, Smith, and Tailor there were a multitude of original bearers of the name. The reason for their being so many Smith’s today is that there were so many kinds of craftsmen important to the village or town—a smith makes something (compare with a monger who sells something). There were blacksmiths, shoesmiths (horseshoes), arrowsmiths, swordsmiths, goldsmiths, greensmiths (copper), whitesmiths (tin), sicksmith/sexsmith (sickles) and many more. Other countries had them too, thus we see others ‘in disguise’ in the English speaking world as Faber (Latin), Schmidt (German), Lefe(b)vre (French), Govan, Gowan, and Gow (Celtic), Herrero (Spanish) and the East European Kovacs or Kowalski.


Occupation Surnames

Occupational surnames cover all the common occupations of Mediaeval Europe: agricultural, manufacturing and retail with surnames like Bacon (pork butcher), Baker, Brewer, Cheesman, Cooper, Fisher, Fletcher (arrowmaker), Gardiner, Glover, Ironmonger, Kellogg (‘kill hog’ a pork butcher), Mason, Miller, Slater, Spicer, Spurrier (spur maker), Tapper (wine merchant, also weaver of carpets), Turner, Woodward (in charge of forests). Those who made things include a long list with the suffixes -maker like Bowmaker, Shoemaker, and Slaymaker (shuttles for weavers), and -wright, mainly workers in wood, such as Arkwright (chests), Boatwright, Cartwright, Shipwright and Wainwright (wagons) who featured prominently in the local scene. A herd looked after animals as in Calvert (calves), Cowherd or Coward (cows), Goddard (goats), Neatherd (oxen), Shepherd (sheep), Stoddard (stud of horses), and Swinnart (swine) and the generic Heard, Herd, and Hird. The importance of the English wool trade is indicated by the number of surnames coming from it. Weaver, Webb, Webber and Webster were involved in weaving. Those who treated woollen cloth have given us three surnames, Fuller, Tucker, and Walker, as these were the dialect terms in the south and east, the southwest, and the west and north respectively. Dying cloth is represented by Dexter, Dyer and Lister, also from different dialects. Card, Kempster, and Tozer were part of the carding process, and Sherman would have sheared either the sheep or the finished cloth. Most of them were used as surnames but many have died out. Another book that usefully classifies and lists a huge number of surnames from occupations is Dolan, however his historical and genealogical information has many inaccuracies, and the presentation is glib.

Rank or Status Surnames

● Offices in mediaeval society such as Bachelor (young knight), Butler, Chamberlaine/Chambers/Chalmers, Clerk/Clark, Dempster (judge), Franklin (gentleman below a knight), Knight, Laird, Marshall, Page, Squire and Sumner (from summoner, the man who ensured the appearance of witnesses at court).

● Noblemen and church officials gave rise to several names, but most are probably from nicknames (someone who acted the part in a play, or whose behaviour resembled one) or from servants of these men. Examples include Abbott, Bishop, Dean, Duke, Earl, Friar, King, Lord, Monk, Nunn, Pope, Priest, Prince and Prior.

● Servants of great people also formed surnames with suffixes such as the possessive -s, as in Parsons, Squires, and Vickers, or with -man as in Bateman (Bartholomew’s man), Maidman (servant to a lady or convent), and Matthewman.

The leather is stretched and burnished to produce a uniform thickness and suppleness. Dyeing and other chemical finishes give the leather its desired colour. After currying, the leather is then ready to pass to the fashioning trades such as saddlery, bridlery, shoe-making, and glove-making.
